At the time of its opening, the airport was called the Southwest Florida Regional Airport (the airport code RSW is short for ” R egional S outh- W est”). Delta Air Lines operated the first flight. The original airport terminal was located on the north side of the runway at the end of Chamberlin Parkway and initially included 14 gates in two concourses.
